The story behind
This playful ukiyo-e print by Utagawa Yoshifuji is titled One of the Fifty-three Stations: The Monster Cat.
Using the technique known as yose-e (assembled images),
multiple cats are cleverly combined
to form a single, large feline face.
At first glance it appears unified,
but a closer look reveals individual bodies, paws, and tails.
The work belongs to a humorous series
that parodies the famous Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō,
transforming well-known place names into visual wordplay.
Blending wit, illusion, and meticulous design,
this print reflects the Edo-period love for visual puzzles
and lighthearted artistic experimentation.
